Because Paul’s new life was Christ’s life, there was no point in trying to keep the law. That would simply have been drawing attention to his old self, which had died. That old self continues to exist, of course, and is subject to the law, but so far as justification is concerned, Christ and I are so closely connected that he lives in me and I live in him.
